KEY FACTS

Astral Developments Ltd. has  submitted a planning application to build a Rail Frieght Interchange at Parkside, Newton-le-Willows.

This will be the biggest rail freight terminal in Britain.

Their proposals are for a site of 272 hectares ( 640 acres ) of land currently classified as 'Greenbelt Land'.

The site will be operational 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

There are plans for up to 18 trains in and 18 trains out accessing  the site each day, using the Earlestown link.   Trains will be between 450 metres and 775 metres long.

It is predicted that up to 10,000 jobs could be created by the Terminal.  The developers anticipate that there will be 5000 lorry movements per day which is the equivalent of one every 20 seconds.

A new motorway junction to replace Junction 22 will be built to provide a direct link into the site

The buildings on the site will be up to18 metres tall.  Astral Developments advise that they will screen the buildings with trees and build some embankments to assist in reducing noise and light pollution.

The total cost of the development is in the region of £400 million.

Party people PDF Print E-mail

This is the iTV 'Party People' Parkside report from 16th Nov program

On here there are interviews with members of Parkside Action group and local residents voicing their opinions on the site.

The supporters of the site quite rightly pointed out the fact that since the decline of industry in the area it has become increasingly difficult for local young people to obtain local jobs. This then has a knock on effect with the local housing market, resulting in local young people being unable to buy homes in their home town.

No mention was made about how the site as green belt land is not currently accessible to the people of Newton  but once the development is in place, there will be public access areas which will have water features and nature areas.

REASON FOR THIS SITE PDF Print E-mail
Written by Siobhan

Thank you for taking the time to look at my site, as you may see, it is still under development, and will probably be subject to change over the coming weeks and months.

I decided to start this site as an alternative to using my space as a blog for the proposed Freight Distribution Center development at PARKSIDE, in Newton-le-Willows.  This is the area which includes the former Parkside Colliery site, which closed over ten years ago, with the loss of many jobs, both in mining and also in local businesses, with the resultant loss of revenue in the town.

We just have to look around the town now to see that something is desperately needed to restore a healthy sense of pride in what we have. I believe that the development at Parkside will provide many local jobs, not just within the distribution centre but also in local industry and shops.

The gasses produced when mining was undertaken at the site were previously piped and used by Crosfield chemicals in Warrington, in order to supply energy for industrial uses.

These gasses will be used on the Parkside site in a  sustainable power generating system. Along with bio-fuels, these will reduce the amount of emissions produced by utilising more conventional methods of supplying energy.

300,000 native trees and shrubs will be planted on the site to replace the ones which will inevitably be removed during excavation on the site.

25 new water features are also planned for the site which will provide a natural habitat for wildlife.
