I have a personal interest in Newton Lake, Newton le Willows, mainly having played there as a child, and having many happy memories of the times we had there. I remember people using the lake for boating on in the 70's, especially the scouts and sea cadets.
I was saddened to see that the lake has deteriorated now into a mess consisting of rubbish tipped into it, including the usual shopping trolleys and big plastic skips. There appears to have been so much silt deposited into the lake over the years that now there are Islands forming in the once open Lake. These islands have trees growing on them and are inhabited by ducks and other wildlife. Over the years the lake has been neglected and abused, with polluting sustances dumped into feeder streams, which makes its way into Newtons lake and streams. Also the run off from the drainage channels built into the M6 motorway, brings its own debris and pollutants, such as hydrocarbons from fuel, sand and grit washed off the road in rainy weather, all finding their way into the Lake via Millingford brook and others.

I am married, with two children aged 14 and 6. I enjoy many hobbies, including cycling, swimming, local history and keeping tropical fish, i love to read and listen to music. I have a keen amateur interest in local waterways, from streams and lakes to rivers and canals including the Manchester Ship canal. I have long been known to be a supporter of using alternative transport for our freight, which currently is transported by road. Living by the Manchester Ship Canal i believe that more use should be made of this local resource. That more of our freight should be taken off our roads is a universal issue, and it is only by public support and pressure that this can take place. Show comments (0) - Add your comment: |
