REASON FOR THIS SITE PDF Print E-mail
Written by Siobhan

Thank you for taking the time to look at my site, as you may see, it is still under development, and will probably be subject to change over the coming weeks and months.

I decided to start this site as an alternative to using my space as a blog for the proposed Freight Distribution Center development at PARKSIDE, in Newton-le-Willows.  This is the area which includes the former Parkside Colliery site, which closed over ten years ago, with the loss of many jobs, both in mining and also in local businesses, with the resultant loss of revenue in the town.

We just have to look around the town now to see that something is desperately needed to restore a healthy sense of pride in what we have. I believe that the development at Parkside will provide many local jobs, not just within the distribution centre but also in local industry and shops.

Parkside is a historic area in Newton Le Willows with many significant references in local history, having previously been an ancient hunting area/park and also contains  listed farm buildings which are to be relocated to be developed into a heritage centre.

More information on the area can be found in various sources, www.n-le-w.com is just one of them.

As an ex Newton resident i am fully in support of the proposed development , since the colliery was closed this land has been redundant. The towns of Newton, St Helens, Wigan and Warrington need the jobs that this will provide.

Newton was once a great town with a number of large employers, Vulcan works, Viaduct Foundry, McCorquodales printers, Parkside colliery and many others. I know that the heyday for many of these industries is in the past, but since the closure of these companies, Newton has seen an increase in unemployment levels, with its resultant increase in ill health and deprivation in the area.

Other local collieries which have closed have either been developed into business sites like the former Golborne Colliery, housing estates similar to that at Bold colliery with landscaped  wildlife/nature areas.

For Parkside to have been left undeveloped for so long is such a waste, these proposals by Astral will bring function back to the area, and with the addition of landscaping and water features will combine all the uses of the former Colliery sites.

Newton needs this development to take place to restore the towns pride as a leader in transport as it once was with the building of trains at Vulcan and Viaduct works. It is my belief that this will be a great opporunity for the North West region as a whole.

There is an organisation which opposes the planned development and i believe that in all fairness the supporters of the development, a 'pro' site was needed.

With this in mind, i felt it was more appropriate that i set up a site, rather than just a blog page on my space and manage it  more effectively with regards to being able to edit posts which contain sensitive or personal information added.

I would like to thank you again for your time looking at the information i have put on here, and please feel free to contact me or post your own views relating to the development, avoiding any direct insults at people.

Good luck with the new website, I am sure it will be popular, and I hope you have many lively but friendly debates

There are a distinct lack of facts on this issue and both pro and anti groups would do well to push for clarification as opposed to jumping on a band wagon.

Issue - Increased Vehicle movements. 5,000 lorry movements a day (let's assume they are HGV and not Transits) 5,000 * 365 = 1,825,000 new lorry journeys! But Astral claim it will stop 500,000 HGV journeys a year!

Issue - Job Creation - Claim - it will generate 10k jobs. But, Is the Trafford interchange going to continue to operate or will the jobs move to this site? What will the impact of all the additional freight and worker traffic do on the M6 / M62 in the region and what impact will that have on the existing distribution jobs - Sainsburys, Sommerfield, etc..?

Also issues such as Land Drainage, Pollution (noise, light), waste, Impact on the road network all need to be fully evaluated. That's why there are planning procedures to go through.

I hope your site generates some debate and encourages robust studies and evaluations to take place.

I think someone needs to look at the math, as our American bretheren would say, 5000 lorries per day that's almost 3.5 per minute. Assuming everything runs smoothly there would be a queue starting somewhere around Birmingham. Then ten thousand jobs, exactly what will these people be doing, controlling the traffic? I am all for anything that transforms Newton into a better place, but somehow I can't see this as the answer, however I hope I'm proven wrong for everyones sake.
